The “Constitution of the Cărvunari” and human rights.
The text of the Constitution of the Cărvunari provides us with insight into several aspects of the legal life of Romanians and how its authors perceived and defined the human rights, including the right to freedom of religion of other ethnicities who were forced by various circumstances to seek refuge in the Romanian Principalities. Historical and legal documents attest to the fact that foreigners enjoyed from the locals, the Romanians, hospitality and good coexistence, which allowed them to own property and profess their own religious beliefs, leading to unity in diversity, nourished by the spirit of cohabitation in the spirit of tolerance and hospitality. The text of the Constitution of the Cărvunari, which was initially presented to the ruler of Moldavia, Ioniță Sandu Sturdza, in the form of a “Memorandum” with a view to implementing social reforms, remains for lawyers, historians, theologians, sociologists etc. an edifying testimony regarding the legal regime of human rights in Moldova in 1822.
