Repression and Resistance in Northern Bukovina: A Testimony of Faith by Seventh-day Adventists.
The article examines the experience of the Seventh-day Adventist community in Northern Bukovina under Soviet political repression, framing this phenomenon within the dynamics of suffering, spiritual resistance, and faithfulness. Following the region’s integration into the USSR, Adventists were subjected to constant surveillance, religious prohibitions, deportations, and pressures related to compulsory military service, especially due to their refusal to work on the Sabbath. In response, they embraced a peaceful form of resistance grounded in prayer, community solidarity, and the preservation of spiritual identity. The study highlights that although numerically small, Adventists became witnesses of a testimony of faith that transcends borders and historical time, transforming suffering into a theological and missiological resource. Thus, repression and resistance are not only historical categories but also theological realities reaffirming freedom of conscience as the foundation of human dignity. The testimony of Bukovinian Adventists stands as a plea for religious freedom and for understanding faith as a form of resistance against totalitarianism.
